Common Misunderstandings About Malta’s Get Qualified Scheme
❌ You CANNOT receive the Get Qualified refund as cash or cheque.
❌ It is NOT a cash-back payment.
❌ It is NOT money paid into your bank account.
"It only works if you are earning a taxable salary in Malta"
The Get Qualified Scheme in Malta is a tax credit, not a cash refund. This means you can reduce the amount of income tax you pay in Malta, and any unused credit can be carried forward for up to 10 years. To benefit from this scheme, non-EU students must remain in Malta after their studies, work in a job that earns taxable income, and file an annual Maltese tax return. Only once you start earning and paying tax in Malta can you use the tax credit.
How it works explained
How the “70% refund” actually works?
Example: Your course fees = €8,000
You are eligible for 70% = €5,600
This €5,600 is not given to you as cash.
Instead, it can be used to reduce your tax bill in future years.
What Costs are Eligible?
Registration fees paid to the awarding body.
Tuition fees paid to the recognised institution for the qualification.
Examination fees, including one resit per exam/assignment required for the qualification.
“Bench fees” and other resource-usage costs directly related to tuition/exam.
Note: Costs such as flights, accommodation, living expenses are not eligible.
Now Lets Think you are working in Malta for 1 year after graduation, If your annual Maltese tax is €2,000:
You use €2,000 of your tax credit
You pay zero tax that year
Remaining €3,600 credit stays for future years
